Safety warning: Never attempt to open, disassemble, or modify UPS batteries. Lead-acid batteries contain corrosive acid that can cause chemical burns, and lithium-ion batteries can catch fire or explode if punctured or short-circuited. Always handle UPS batteries with care and transport them upright to prevent leakage.

When to Replace a UPS

Most UPS batteries have a design life of 3 to 5 years, though actual lifespan depends on operating temperature, charge/discharge cycles, and load conditions. The UPS electronics themselves typically last longer than the batteries, so you may need to replace batteries several times over the life of the unit.

Signs that your UPS batteries need replacement include shortened runtime during power outages, the UPS alarming or displaying battery fault warnings, visible swelling or deformation of battery casings (especially concerning with lithium-ion), and the UPS failing self-test routines.

When the UPS electronics themselves become outdated or fail, the entire unit needs to be disposed of, batteries and all.

How to Dispose of UPS Batteries

Lead-Acid Batteries

Lead-acid batteries are one of the most recyclable products in existence. Over 99% of the lead in a used battery can be recovered and reused in new batteries. The sulphuric acid is neutralised or recycled, and the plastic casing is typically recycled as well.

In Australia, lead-acid battery recycling is well-established. Options include battery retailers and auto parts stores (many accept used batteries for recycling), professional e-waste and ITAD providers, licensed battery recyclers, and council hazardous waste collection points.

Large commercial UPS systems with substantial battery banks are best handled by a professional recycler who can collect from your premises. Moving heavy battery cabinets requires proper equipment and training.

Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion battery recycling infrastructure in Australia is still developing but has improved significantly in recent years. Facilities like Envirostream and Renewable Metals are now processing lithium-ion batteries domestically, recovering cobalt, lithium, nickel, and other valuable materials.

When transporting lithium-ion batteries for recycling, ensure they are packaged to prevent short circuits. Tape over exposed terminals, place each battery in an individual bag or container, and do not stack heavy items on top of them. Damaged or swollen lithium-ion batteries require special handling and should be collected by a hazardous waste specialist.

Nickel-Cadmium Batteries

NiCd batteries must be recycled through channels that can handle cadmium safely. Do not mix them with regular battery recycling streams. Contact a specialist battery recycler or hazardous waste service for disposal of NiCd batteries.

Disposing of the UPS Electronics

Once the batteries are removed (or if you are disposing of the entire unit including batteries), the remaining UPS electronics follow the same recycling path as other e-waste. The unit contains circuit boards, transformers, capacitors, wiring, and a metal or plastic chassis, all of which can be recycled through standard e-waste channels.

Large UPS units may also contain significant amounts of copper in their transformers and inductors, making them more valuable for materials recovery than typical consumer electronics.

Note that some UPS models have a network management card that stores network configuration data and potentially SNMP credentials. If your UPS was connected to your network for monitoring, factory reset the management card before disposal.

Key considerations include maintaining an inventory of all UPS units and their battery replacement dates, scheduling battery replacements proactively rather than waiting for failures, documenting the disposal of batteries and electronics for environmental compliance, and tracking the weight of batteries recycled for sustainability reporting.
