External hard drives are one of the most data-sensitive items you will ever need to recycle. Unlike a keyboard or a monitor, an external drive’s entire purpose is to store your personal or business information. That makes data destruction the absolute top priority before any recycling or disposal takes place.
The Data Problem
An external hard drive may contain years of accumulated files: documents, photos, financial records, passwords, personal correspondence, business data, and anything else you have ever saved or backed up to it. Even if you have deleted files from the drive, that data remains fully recoverable until the drive has been properly overwritten or physically destroyed.
Standard file deletion simply removes the directory entry pointing to the file. The actual data remains on the disk platters until those sectors are overwritten by new data. Data recovery software, freely available online, can retrieve deleted files from a formatted drive in minutes. Professional data recovery services can often recover data even after a full format.
How to Properly Destroy Data on External Drives
The right approach depends on the type of drive and what you plan to do with it afterward.
Traditional Hard Disk Drives (HDDs)
External HDDs with spinning magnetic platters should be wiped using a NIST 800-88 compliant overwrite method. This involves writing data across every sector of the drive, then verifying that the overwrite was complete. Free tools like DBAN (Darik’s Boot and Nuke) can perform this operation, though commercial tools provide better verification and reporting.
A single-pass overwrite with verification is sufficient for most purposes. The old recommendation of multiple overwrite passes is based on outdated assumptions about magnetic media and is no longer considered necessary by NIST or other standards bodies for modern drives.
If the drive is not going to be reused, physical destruction is the most certain method. This can mean professional shredding (the drive is fed through an industrial shredder that reduces it to small fragments), degaussing (a powerful magnetic field scrambles the data on the platters), or drilling holes through the platters (less thorough but better than nothing for personal drives).
Solid State Drives (SSDs)
External SSDs require a different approach because of how flash memory manages data internally. Traditional overwrite methods may not reach all data on an SSD due to wear levelling, over-provisioning, and spare blocks that the drive controller manages transparently.
For SSDs, use the manufacturer’s secure erase utility if available, or a tool that issues the ATA Secure Erase command, which instructs the drive controller to reset all flash cells. This is more effective than a simple overwrite on SSD media.
For high-security requirements, physical destruction is again the most certain method for SSDs. Shredding to small particle size ensures that individual flash chips cannot be recovered and read.

What External Drives Contain
From a materials perspective, external hard drives are compact but contain several valuable and recyclable components.
Traditional HDDs contain aluminium platters (coated with a thin magnetic layer), a powerful neodymium magnet in the voice coil actuator, copper wiring in the motor and actuator, a circuit board with controller chips and precious metals, and an aluminium or steel casing (inside the external enclosure).
External SSDs contain NAND flash memory chips (silicon-based), a controller chip, a small circuit board, and a plastic or aluminium external casing. SSDs are lighter and contain fewer raw materials than HDDs of the same capacity.
The external enclosure adds a second circuit board (the USB or Thunderbolt bridge board), an additional plastic or aluminium housing, and sometimes a cooling fan or heat sink.
The neodymium magnets in HDDs are among the most valuable components for recyclers. These rare earth magnets are increasingly sought after as global demand for neodymium continues to grow.
Recycling Options
Professional data destruction and recycling services are the gold standard for external drives, especially those that have stored sensitive business data. These services will securely destroy the data (with certification), then recycle the materials through proper channels. This is the recommended approach for any drive that has stored financial, medical, legal, or otherwise sensitive information.
Council e-waste drop-off points accept external hard drives at transfer stations. However, if the drive contains personal data, you should wipe it yourself before dropping it off, as council recycling services typically do not perform data destruction.
Electronics retailers sometimes accept old storage devices for recycling, though policies vary by store.
When to Wipe vs When to Destroy
The decision between software wiping and physical destruction depends on your risk tolerance and the sensitivity of the data.
Software wiping is appropriate when the drive is functional, the data is personal but not highly sensitive, and you want to reuse or resell the drive. A properly executed NIST 800-88 compliant overwrite renders data unrecoverable for all practical purposes.
Physical destruction is appropriate when the drive has stored highly sensitive data (financial, medical, legal, classified), the drive is faulty and cannot be reliably overwritten, your organisation’s data destruction policy requires physical destruction, or regulatory requirements mandate physical destruction for certain data types.
Do Not Forget About These
When doing an e-waste cleanout, external hard drives are easy to overlook because they are small. Check desk drawers, IT storerooms, filing cabinets, and even off-site storage for old external drives. Many organisations have backup drives from years ago sitting in storage that contain sensitive data and have never been properly decommissioned.
Old external drives that used FireWire, eSATA, or USB 2.0 connections are particularly likely to be forgotten because they are no longer compatible with current hardware. Just because they cannot easily be connected to a modern computer does not mean the data on them is inaccessible to someone with the right cables and adapters.
