Memory cards are tiny, easy to forget about, and nearly always contain personal data. SD cards, microSD cards, and their various predecessors accumulate in camera bags, desk drawers, old phones, and forgotten devices over the years. Their small size makes them easy to overlook during e-waste disposal, but the data they carry can be just as sensitive as anything stored on a full-sized hard drive.
Why Memory Cards Matter for Data Security
A typical SD card from a digital camera might contain thousands of personal photographs, including location data embedded in the image metadata (EXIF data). A microSD card from an old smartphone could contain contacts, messages, app data, and documents. Memory cards from dashcams and security cameras contain video footage that may include identifiable individuals and location information.
The combination of personal data and small physical size makes memory cards one of the riskiest items in the e-waste stream from a privacy perspective. A lost or improperly disposed memory card can easily fall into the wrong hands, and the data on it can be read by anyone with a card reader and a computer.
Types of Memory Cards You Might Find
SD and SDHC/SDXC cards are the standard format used in most cameras, laptops, and some tablets. They measure 32mm x 24mm and are available in capacities from a few megabytes (very old cards) to several terabytes.
microSD and microSDHC/microSDXC cards are used in smartphones, drones, action cameras, dashcams, and many other portable devices. They are tiny at just 15mm x 11mm, which makes them exceptionally easy to lose.
CompactFlash (CF) cards are larger and sturdier, used primarily in professional cameras and some industrial equipment. They are being replaced by CFexpress in newer equipment but are still widely found in older gear.
Legacy formats you might encounter include Memory Stick (Sony), xD-Picture Card (Olympus/Fujifilm), SmartMedia, and MultiMediaCard (MMC). These formats are obsolete but cards from old devices may still turn up during cleanouts.
How to Destroy Data on Memory Cards
Software Wiping
For cards you want to continue using or that contain low-sensitivity data, a full format followed by a data overwrite is effective. Note that a “quick format” does not destroy data. You need to perform a full format, which writes zeros to all storage sectors, or use a dedicated wiping tool that performs a complete overwrite.
On Windows, you can perform a full format by right-clicking the drive in File Explorer, selecting Format, and making sure “Quick Format” is unchecked. On macOS, use Disk Utility to erase the card with the “Security Options” set to at least one pass of zeros.
For cards that have stored sensitive data, use a NIST 800-88 compliant wiping tool that provides verification. Keep in mind the same limitations as other flash media: wear levelling may leave trace data in spare blocks that a standard overwrite cannot reach.
Physical Destruction
For high-sensitivity data or cards you do not plan to reuse, physical destruction is simple and definitive. Cut the card in half with scissors, making sure to cut through the memory chip (the black rectangle visible on the card). For microSD cards, which are extremely small, cutting them into several pieces ensures the memory chip is damaged beyond recovery.

Recycling Memory Cards
Individual memory cards have negligible material value for recycling. They contain a few grams of plastic, a tiny circuit board, and a flash memory chip. However, they should still be recycled through e-waste channels rather than put in general waste, as they contain electronic components that do not belong in landfill.
Council e-waste drop-off points accept memory cards, though they are so small they might get lost in a general e-waste bin. Consider putting them in a small labelled bag or container when dropping them off.
Battery and small e-waste collection points at supermarkets and retailers that accept small electronic items are a convenient option for memory cards.
Bundled with other e-waste: The most practical approach is to collect memory cards alongside other small e-waste (USB drives, cables, batteries) in a dedicated container, then include everything in your next e-waste disposal run.
Finding Hidden Memory Cards
Memory cards are notorious for being left inside devices. Before recycling any of the following items, check for memory cards inside them: digital cameras and video cameras, smartphones and tablets (microSD slot), drones, dashcams and action cameras, portable gaming devices, baby monitors, security cameras, e-readers, GPS devices, and audio recorders.
It is remarkably common for people to recycle or donate a device without realising there is a memory card full of personal data still inside it.
Business Use of Memory Cards
In business environments, memory cards appear in more places than most IT managers track. Security cameras often record to microSD cards. Point-of-sale systems may use SD cards for storage or backups. Portable data collection devices in field operations frequently use removable flash storage. Industrial equipment and control systems may use CompactFlash or SD cards for configuration storage.
When decommissioning any of these systems, include memory card disposal in the decommission checklist. The data on a security camera’s SD card, for instance, may include footage of staff, customers, and building interiors that constitutes personal information under the Privacy Act.
