Consumer and commercial drones have become remarkably popular over the past decade, but their technology advances quickly and older models are frequently replaced. Whether your drone has suffered a crash landing, been grounded by regulation changes, or simply been overtaken by newer technology, disposing of it properly involves a few more considerations than typical electronics.
What Makes Drones Different
A drone is a complex assembly of components that spans several e-waste categories. A typical consumer drone contains lithium-polymer (LiPo) batteries (often the most dangerous component to dispose of), brushless electric motors with neodymium magnets, a flight controller board and electronic speed controllers, a camera with image sensor and gimbal mechanism, GPS receiver and compass modules, Wi-Fi and radio frequency transmitters, a plastic or carbon fibre airframe, and propellers (typically plastic or carbon fibre).
The combination of high-energy batteries, flight data storage, and camera footage means drones require attention to both safety and data security during disposal.
Data on Your Drone
Drones store more data than most people realise. The internal storage or SD card may contain photos and video footage (potentially including images of private property, people, and sensitive locations), flight logs recording GPS coordinates, altitude, speed, and timestamps, Wi-Fi network credentials (for drones that connect to home Wi-Fi), and your account credentials for the manufacturer’s app and cloud service.
Before disposing of a drone, remove the SD card and either wipe it or destroy it. Perform a factory reset through the manufacturer’s app (DJI Fly, Autel Explorer, etc.) to clear flight logs and account data from the drone’s internal storage. Deregister the drone from your account in the app.
If your drone was registered with CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority), update your registration to remove the disposed aircraft.
Handling the Batteries
Drone batteries are the single most important component to handle correctly during disposal. LiPo batteries are inherently unstable compared to the lithium-ion cells in phones and laptops. They are more prone to thermal runaway (uncontrolled heating that can lead to fire) if damaged or improperly stored.
Healthy batteries: If the battery is in good condition (not swollen, not damaged, holds a charge), discharge it to storage level (typically 40-60% charge) and take it to a battery recycling point. Many electronics retailers and council transfer stations accept lithium batteries.
Damaged or swollen batteries: If the battery is puffy, dented, or shows any signs of damage, treat it as a hazardous item. Do not transport it in an enclosed vehicle without proper containment. Place it in a fireproof LiPo bag or a metal container with sand, and take it to a hazardous waste collection point. Some fire stations and council facilities accept damaged lithium batteries.
Multiple batteries: Enthusiast and commercial drone operators often have several spare batteries. Account for all of them during disposal, including any sitting in charging hubs or carrying cases.
Recycling the Drone Body
Once the battery and SD card are removed, the drone itself can be recycled through standard e-waste channels. The motors contain copper windings and neodymium magnets that have good recycling value. The circuit boards contain the usual precious metals. The camera module contains semiconductor sensors and glass lenses. The airframe is typically plastic or carbon fibre (carbon fibre is difficult to recycle but research is advancing).
Council e-waste drop-off points accept drones at transfer stations. Remove the battery first and recycle it separately through a battery program.

Resale is worth considering for drones that still fly well. Popular models from DJI, Autel, and other brands retain reasonable value on the second-hand market, particularly if they include spare batteries, a carrying case, and accessories. Just factory reset and deregister before selling.
Commercial and Agricultural Drones
Commercial drones used in surveying, inspection, agriculture, and filmmaking are larger, more expensive, and contain more complex electronics than consumer models. They may have specialised sensors (LiDAR, multispectral, thermal imaging), larger battery packs, and custom payloads.
Disposal of commercial drones should follow the same principles but with additional attention to data security. Survey and mapping drones may contain geospatial data for client projects that is subject to confidentiality agreements. Agricultural drones may store crop and property data. Inspection drones may have recorded infrastructure details that are commercially sensitive.
Ensure all project data is removed from the drone’s internal storage and any associated ground station computers before disposal. For high-value commercial drones, an ITAD provider can handle secure data destruction and disposition.
The Remote Controller
Do not forget the remote controller. Drone controllers are sophisticated devices containing a display (in many current models), circuit boards, a rechargeable battery, radio transmitter, and sometimes a built-in SSD for caching video feeds. The controller may store Wi-Fi passwords and flight data and should be factory reset before disposal.
Controllers with built-in screens (like the DJI RC or RC Pro) are essentially tablets and contain the same range of materials and data considerations as any tablet device.
