Two Paths for End-of-Life Electronics

When electronic equipment reaches the end of its useful life in your organisation, two primary options exist: refurbishment for continued use, or recycling for material recovery. Both are responsible choices that keep electronics out of landfill, but they deliver very different outcomes in terms of environmental impact, financial return, and resource efficiency. Understanding when each option is appropriate helps businesses make better decisions about their retired IT assets.

The distinction matters because not all end-of-life outcomes are equal. Refurbishment keeps a complete product in use, avoiding the environmental cost of manufacturing a replacement. Recycling breaks a product down into raw materials, which then need to be processed and manufactured into new products. Market demand. There needs to be a viable market for the refurbished equipment. Business-grade laptops from major manufacturers like Dell, HP, and Lenovo have strong secondary markets. Niche or proprietary equipment with limited demand may be harder to resell, reducing the economic viability of refurbishment.

Software support. Equipment that can run current, supported operating systems and receive security updates is far more valuable in the secondary market than equipment that is stuck on unsupported software. This is often the key determinant for older devices.

When Recycling Is the Right Choice

Recycling becomes the appropriate path when equipment cannot practically or economically be refurbished. Several situations point toward recycling rather than refurbishment.

Equipment is too old. Hardware that is beyond the point where it can run current software, receive security updates, or perform adequately for any reasonable use case has passed the threshold for refurbishment. A laptop from 2012 running a mechanical hard drive with 4GB of RAM has limited value as a functional computer, regardless of its physical condition.

Significant physical damage. Equipment with cracked screens, water damage, broken hinges, failed motherboards, or other major defects may cost more to repair than the refurbished unit would be worth. When repair costs exceed resale value, recycling is the economically rational choice.

Specialised or proprietary equipment. Some categories of equipment have very limited secondary markets. Custom-configured servers, specialised industrial computers, and equipment designed for specific applications may have no realistic buyers, making material recovery through recycling the best available option.

Security requirements. In some cases, organisational policy or regulatory requirements may mandate physical destruction of storage media rather than software-based wiping. When physical destruction of key components is required, refurbishment of the complete device is not possible. However, other components (screens, memory, casings) may still be salvaged for use in repairing other devices.

The Environmental Comparison

The environmental case for refurbishment over recycling is strong. Manufacturing a new electronic device is resource-intensive. A single laptop requires approximately 1,200 kilograms of raw materials, 190,000 litres of water, and significant energy input to produce. When a refurbished laptop replaces the need to manufacture a new one, all of that environmental impact is avoided.

Recycling recovers materials but at a significant energy cost. Shredding, separating, smelting, and refining recovered metals requires substantial energy input. The material recovery rate, while good for precious metals and some base metals, is imperfect. Some materials are lost in the process, and the recycled output needs further processing before it can be used in new products.

Studies comparing the carbon footprint of refurbished versus new devices consistently show that extending a device’s life through refurbishment reduces its lifecycle carbon footprint by 50 to 80 percent compared to manufacturing and purchasing a new replacement. A practical example: a fleet of 100 three-year-old Dell business laptops might generate $200 to $400 per unit through refurbishment and resale, totalling $20,000 to $40,000. The same laptops sent directly to recycling might generate $5 to $15 per unit in material value, totalling $500 to $1,500. The difference is significant and can meaningfully offset the cost of replacement equipment.

However, not every device in a fleet will be suitable for refurbishment. A realistic assessment by an experienced ITAD provider will typically sort a fleet into refurbishable and recyclable streams, maximising overall value recovery by applying the right process to each device.

A good ITAD provider makes the refurbish-or-recycle decision on a per-device basis, applying their market knowledge and technical assessment capabilities to determine the highest-value outcome for each item.
