When IT equipment reaches end of life, there are three main disposition channels: recycling, refurbishing, and reselling. Each serves a different purpose and delivers different outcomes in terms of environmental impact, financial return, and resource conservation. Understanding when to use each channel helps organisations maximise the value and minimise the waste from their IT disposal programs.
Reselling: Maximising Financial Return
Reselling involves placing working IT equipment on the secondary market for purchase by other users. This is the disposition channel that generates the highest financial return and delivers the best environmental outcome, because the equipment continues its useful life rather than being broken down for materials.
Equipment suitable for resale is typically less than four to five years old, in good working condition, from a recognised manufacturer, and has specifications that remain relevant for current use cases. Enterprise laptops, servers, networking equipment, and monitors are the most commonly resold asset categories.
The resale process involves certified data destruction, functional testing, cosmetic assessment, and potentially minor repairs or upgrades. Equipment is then listed through secondary market channels including wholesale buyers, online marketplaces, and direct sales. Professional ITAD providers have established buyer networks that typically achieve better prices than organisations attempting to sell equipment independently.
Resale extends the equipment’s useful life by several years, delaying the environmental cost of manufacturing a replacement and keeping materials in productive use. It is the most aligned with circular economy principles.
Refurbishing: Extending Useful Life
Refurbishing goes a step further than simple resale by investing in the equipment to improve its condition or capability. This might include replacing batteries in laptops, upgrading RAM or storage, replacing damaged screens or keyboards, cleaning and restoring cosmetic appearance, installing fresh operating systems, and recertifying equipment for sale with a warranty.
Refurbishment adds cost but also adds value, allowing equipment to command higher prices and reach a broader market. A refurbished laptop with a new battery, fresh SSD, and clean install of the latest OS is a more attractive proposition than the same laptop sold as-is.
The refurbishment model is particularly strong for equipment that is fundamentally sound but shows wear from its first life. Enterprise laptops, for example, may have worn keyboards and depleted batteries but perfectly functional processors, memory, and display panels. A modest investment in replacement parts can transform the device’s market value.
Recycling: Recovering Materials
Recycling is the appropriate channel for equipment that cannot be resold or refurbished. This includes devices that are too old to have meaningful computing capability, equipment that is physically damaged beyond economical repair, devices with components that are obsolete and have no secondary market, and CRT monitors, old printers, and other equipment with limited reuse potential.
The recycling process involves breaking equipment down into its component materials: metals (steel, aluminium, copper, precious metals), plastics, glass, and circuit boards. These materials are then processed for reuse in new manufacturing. While recycling recovers material value, it generates far less financial return than resale and requires more energy than refurbishment.
Under Victoria’s e-waste landfill ban, recycling through certified channels is mandatory for equipment that cannot be reused. Never send electronic waste to landfill, and always use recyclers who can demonstrate compliance with environmental regulations and proper handling of hazardous materials like batteries, lead, and mercury.
The Disposition Hierarchy
Best practice follows a clear hierarchy: reuse first, then refurbish, then recycle. This hierarchy maximises both financial and environmental outcomes.
First priority: Internal redeployment. Before equipment enters the external disposition pipeline, evaluate whether it can be reused within your organisation. A laptop that is no longer suitable for a developer may work perfectly for a receptionist.
Second priority: Resale or donation. Equipment that cannot be reused internally but is still functional should be directed to the secondary market or donated to organisations that can use it.
Third priority: Refurbishment. Equipment that needs work before it can be reused should be assessed for refurbishment viability. If the cost of refurbishment is justified by the resulting value, invest in the upgrade.
Fourth priority: Component harvesting. Equipment that is not viable as a complete unit may contain valuable components, such as memory modules, processors, or storage drives, that can be harvested and used in other devices.
Fifth priority: Material recycling. Equipment that has no reuse or component value should be recycled to recover raw materials.
Making the Right Choice
Your ITAD provider should assess each device and recommend the optimal disposition channel. The assessment considers the device’s age, condition, specification, and current market demand. A good provider maximises the number of devices directed to resale or refurbishment, because these channels generate the best financial returns and environmental outcomes.
Be cautious of providers who default everything to recycling. While recycling is necessary for some equipment, a provider who recycles functional equipment is destroying value that could have been recovered. Request reporting that shows the proportion of equipment directed to each disposition channel, and question any provider who sends a high percentage to recycling.
