Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices are the personal servers of the consumer and small business world. They store everything from family photo libraries and media collections to business documents and backups. When it comes time to dispose of a NAS, the data security implications are more serious than almost any other consumer device because of the sheer volume and sensitivity of data these machines typically hold.

What Is at Stake

A NAS device is essentially a small server designed to store files. Over its lifetime, a typical home or small business NAS accumulates years of documents, photos, videos, financial records, business files, and backups of other devices. A NAS with four 4TB drives holds 16 terabytes of raw storage, which is enough space for millions of documents and hundreds of thousands of photos.

Unlike a laptop or phone that might hold your most recent files, a NAS often serves as a long-term archive containing data spanning years or even decades. This concentration of personal and business data in one device makes secure disposal absolutely critical.

Data concentration risk: A NAS device may contain more personal and business data than all your other devices combined. It often holds complete device backups, photo libraries, financial records, and years of accumulated documents. Treat NAS disposal with the same level of care as server decommissioning.

Step 1: Ensure Data Is Backed Up Elsewhere

Before doing anything destructive, make sure any data you still need exists somewhere else. If you are replacing the NAS with a new unit, transfer data to the new system first. If you are moving to cloud storage, verify that the migration is complete and that files are accessible from the cloud before touching the old NAS.

Check for unique data that might only exist on the NAS. This includes automated backups from devices that have since been replaced, old project files, and media that may not be stored anywhere else.

Step 2: Destroy Data on the Drives

NAS devices contain one or more hard drives (or SSDs) arranged in a RAID array. The data destruction approach depends on whether you plan to reuse the drives or destroy them.

If Reusing the Drives

Remove the drives from the NAS enclosure and connect them individually to a computer (using a USB-to-SATA adapter or a dock). Wipe each drive individually using a NIST 800-88 compliant overwrite tool. Note that RAID arrays split data across drives in patterns that vary by RAID level, so a single drive removed from a RAID 5 or RAID 6 array does not contain a complete copy of any file. However, partial data can still be meaningful, especially text documents that remain readable in fragments.

Do not rely on the NAS’s built-in “secure erase” function unless you can verify that it performs a complete overwrite of all drive sectors rather than just deleting the file system metadata.

If Destroying the Drives

For maximum security, remove the drives and have them physically destroyed through a professional data destruction service. This is the recommended approach for NAS devices that have stored sensitive business data, client information, financial records, or anything subject to regulatory requirements.

Each drive should receive an individual certificate of destruction documenting the serial number, method, and date.

Step 3: Reset the NAS Enclosure

The NAS enclosure itself (the box without the drives) contains a small amount of flash storage that stores the operating system, configuration data, user accounts, and network settings. Even without the data drives, the NAS stores Wi-Fi or network credentials, user accounts and passwords, shared folder configurations, VPN settings and remote access configurations, and app configurations (if the NAS runs apps like Plex, Docker containers, etc.).

Perform a full factory reset of the NAS operating system. For Synology NAS devices, use the “Reset” button on the back panel (Mode 1 resets network, Mode 2 resets everything). For QNAP, use the reset button or the web interface. For other brands, check the manufacturer’s documentation.

Recycling the Hardware

A NAS device without its drives is a compact computer containing a processor, RAM, a small circuit board, a power supply, one or more fans, and a metal and plastic housing. With the drives, the unit also includes the hard drives or SSDs themselves, SATA backplanes and cabling, and drive trays (usually plastic with metal rails).

All of these components are recyclable through standard e-waste channels.

Resale Potential

NAS enclosures (without drives) can have reasonable resale value, especially for popular brands like Synology, QNAP, and Asustor. A two to three-year-old Synology NAS in good condition, factory reset and without drives, can sell for a meaningful fraction of its original price. NAS buyers on the secondary market typically supply their own drives, so selling the enclosure separately is standard practice.

The hard drives themselves, if wiped and still in good health, also have resale value. NAS-grade drives (like Western Digital Red or Seagate IronWolf) are sought after on the secondary market. Use manufacturer tools (Western Digital Data Lifeguard, Seagate SeaTools) to check drive health before selling, as buyers will want to see SMART data showing the drive is still reliable.

Business NAS Disposal

Small businesses often use NAS devices as file servers, backup targets, or even application servers. These devices may contain client data, employee information, financial records, and intellectual property that is subject to the Privacy Act and potentially industry-specific regulations.

Business NAS disposal should follow the same rigour as server decommissioning. Maintain a record of the NAS serial number and the serial numbers of all drives it contained. Obtain certificates of data destruction for each drive. Document the disposal in your IT asset register.

If the NAS was used for backups, check whether any of the backup sets contain data from devices or systems that are still in production. Backup data can contain current credentials, configuration information, and other sensitive material that could be exploited if the drives are not properly destroyed.

Backup trap: NAS devices used for automated backups often contain far more data than anyone remembers. Every device that has ever backed up to the NAS may have deposited copies of its files, including sensitive data from devices that were replaced years ago. Do not assume you know what is on the NAS without checking.
