E-readers like the Amazon Kindle, Kobo, and others have been around for over 15 years now, and many users are on their second, third, or even fourth device. Older models with cracked screens, dead batteries, or sluggish performance tend to sit in drawers indefinitely because people are not sure what to do with them. Here is a straightforward guide to disposing of old e-readers responsibly.

What Is Inside an E-Reader?

E-readers are relatively simple devices compared to tablets or smartphones, but they still contain materials that warrant proper recycling.

The standout component is the e-ink display. Unlike LCD or OLED screens, e-ink (electrophoretic) displays use tiny capsules containing charged black and white particles suspended in a clear fluid. These displays consume almost no power (only when the page changes) and contain no mercury backlighting. The display is bonded to a glass or plastic substrate with thin-film transistors.

Beyond the display, an e-reader contains a processor and RAM (modest by tablet standards), flash storage (typically 4-32 GB), a rechargeable lithium-ion or lithium-polymer battery, a Wi-Fi radio (and sometimes cellular for 4G models), a USB port and charging circuit, a plastic housing, and a touchscreen layer (in newer models).

The battery is the main concern for disposal. While e-reader batteries are smaller than phone batteries (since e-ink displays use very little power), they are still lithium cells that should not go in general waste.

Clearing Your Data

E-readers store more personal data than you might expect. Beyond the books themselves (which are licensed to your account, not truly “yours”), the device may contain your Amazon, Kobo, or other bookstore account credentials, Wi-Fi passwords, browsing history (if the device has a web browser), personal documents you have loaded onto the device, notes and highlights you have made in books, and reading history and preferences.

Before you reset: If you have notes, highlights, or annotations in your books that you want to keep, check whether they are synced to your cloud account. Kindle notes sync to Amazon’s cloud and can be accessed at read.amazon.com. Kobo highlights sync to your Kobo account. Once you factory reset the device, locally-stored annotations that were not synced will be lost.

Kindle: Deregister the device from your Amazon account (Settings, Your Account, Deregister Device). Then perform a factory reset (Settings, Device Options, Reset).

Kobo: Go to Settings, Device Information, then Factory Reset. Sign out of your Kobo account first.

Other e-readers: Check the settings menu for a factory reset or restore option. Deregister from any linked accounts first.

Disposal Options

Trade-In

Amazon offers a trade-in program for Kindle devices that provides Amazon gift card credit. The amount varies by model and condition, but even older Kindles can earn a few dollars in credit. This is the simplest option for Kindle users, as Amazon handles the recycling.

Resale

Recent-model e-readers in good condition can be sold second-hand. The Kindle Paperwhite and Kobo Clara are popular on the resale market. E-readers hold a niche appeal because older models are often preferred by readers who like the button-based interface of earlier devices or want a simpler reading experience without the distractions of a tablet.

Donation

Working e-readers make thoughtful donations to libraries, aged care facilities, hospitals, and literacy programs. An e-reader loaded with free public domain books (available through Project Gutenberg and similar services) can provide thousands of books in a pocket-sized device, which is particularly valuable for people with limited access to physical libraries or bookshops.

E-readers are also helpful for people with visual impairments, as most models allow adjustable font sizes, something that physical books cannot offer.

Recycling

For e-readers that are broken or too old to be useful, recycling through e-waste channels is the appropriate path.

Council e-waste drop-off points accept e-readers at transfer stations alongside other small electronics.

Professional e-waste recyclers process e-readers through their standard small electronics stream.

Manufacturer recycling: Amazon’s trade-in program accepts non-functional Kindles (for minimal or no credit, but they handle the recycling). Other manufacturers may have similar options.

E-Reader Cases and Accessories

E-reader cases are typically made from synthetic leather, fabric, or plastic, sometimes with a magnetic sleep/wake function that involves a small magnet. Cases without electronic components can go in general waste, though leather and fabric options may be accepted by textile recycling programs.

Cases with built-in reading lights (common in older Kindle cases) contain a small LED, battery, and circuit board. These should go through e-waste recycling rather than general waste.

The Environmental Case for E-Readers

Interestingly, e-readers present a nuanced environmental story. While they are electronic devices that eventually become e-waste, they can offset the environmental impact of physical book production if used sufficiently. Studies vary, but most suggest that an e-reader “pays back” its environmental footprint compared to printed books after approximately 20 to 50 books read on the device.

Given that an avid reader might go through 20 or more books per year, a single e-reader that lasts three to five years could displace the environmental impact of 60 to 100 physical books, including the paper, printing, ink, binding, and shipping involved in physical book production.

Of course, this calculation only works if the e-reader is used for its full useful life and then recycled properly. An e-reader that sits in a drawer after six months of use, or that ends up in landfill, does not deliver on this environmental promise.

Longevity tip: E-readers are one of the few electronics categories where older models remain perfectly functional for their primary purpose. An e-reader from five years ago still displays text beautifully and has weeks of battery life. Before replacing an older e-reader, consider whether it still does what you need. A screen protector and a replacement charging cable might be all it needs for several more years of service.
