What Your Old Hardware Actually Contains
A standard enterprise laptop contains around 40 elements from the periodic table. That includes copper, gold, silver, palladium, and rare earth elements used in hard drive motors, display panels, and circuit boards. The International Energy Agency estimates that demand for critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel will more than double by 2030, driven by the energy transition and continued growth in electronics. Recovering those materials from end-of-life electronics, what researchers call urban mining, is faster, cleaner, and increasingly economical.

The Victorian Context
Victoria’s e-waste landfill ban has been in force since July 2019. It prohibits disposing of computers, monitors, televisions, and related equipment in general waste. But staying out of landfill does not automatically mean responsible recovery.
Devices handed to a low-cost informal recycler may technically avoid landfill while still being processed offshore in ways that destroy recoverable value, create environmental harm, or leave data security risks unaddressed. For businesses with Scope 3 emissions reporting obligations under Australia’s developing climate disclosure framework, that distinction matters. Demonstrating genuine material diversion, not just landfill avoidance, is where the audit conversation is heading.
