No, and Here’s Why It Matters
It’s one of the most common questions in household waste management: can you throw old batteries in the bin? The answer is a firm no, regardless of the battery type. Batteries of all kinds should be kept out of your general waste bin, recycling bin, and any other council collection bin. The reasons range from immediate safety hazards to long-term environmental contamination, and with convenient recycling options now available across Australia, there’s no good reason to bin them.
The Fire Risk Is Real and Growing
The most urgent reason to keep batteries out of bins is fire safety. Lithium-ion batteries, the rechargeable type found in phones, laptops, power tools, and countless other devices, are the single biggest fire risk in the waste management industry right now.
When lithium-ion batteries are crushed, punctured, or compressed, as happens in the back of a garbage truck or at a sorting facility, the internal layers can short-circuit. This triggers a thermal runaway reaction where the battery rapidly heats to extreme temperatures, potentially reaching 600°C or more. In a truck full of paper, plastic, and other flammable waste, this creates a serious fire.
These fires are not theoretical. Battery-related fires at waste facilities and in collection vehicles have become a major safety crisis across Australia and globally. The waste industry reports hundreds of battery-caused fires annually in Australia alone, causing millions of dollars in damage, destroying recycling infrastructure, and putting workers at genuine risk of injury.
Even single-use alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D) can cause problems. While they’re less prone to thermal events than lithium batteries, they can still short-circuit if their terminals contact metal objects or each other in a waste bin, and the chemicals inside them don’t belong in landfill.
What About Alkaline Batteries?
You might have heard that alkaline batteries (the standard disposable AA, AAA, C, D, and 9V types) are safe for landfill because they no longer contain mercury. While it’s true that mercury was phased out of alkaline batteries in the 1990s, they still contain materials that shouldn’t be landfilled.
Alkaline batteries contain zinc, manganese dioxide, and potassium hydroxide. In landfill, the casing eventually corrodes and these materials leach into the surrounding environment. While individually the quantities are small, the cumulative effect of millions of batteries going to landfill annually is significant.
More importantly, alkaline batteries are fully recyclable. The zinc and manganese can be recovered and reused. Given that convenient recycling options exist, there’s no practical reason to landfill them even if the environmental impact of individual batteries is modest.
Button Cell Batteries: Small but Serious
Button cell batteries deserve special mention because they pose unique risks beyond fire and environmental contamination. These small, round batteries found in watches, hearing aids, key fobs, and children’s toys contain either lithium, silver oxide, or zinc-air chemistry, all of which should be recycled.
Lithium button cells are a particular swallowing hazard for young children. If swallowed, a button cell can become lodged in the oesophagus, where it generates an electrical current in the moist tissue and causes severe chemical burns within hours. This is a genuine medical emergency that can be fatal. Keeping button cells out of general waste and properly disposing of them reduces the chance of young children encountering loose batteries.
When storing used button cells before disposal, tape over both faces of each cell with sticky tape. This prevents short-circuiting and reduces the risk if a child encounters them.
Where to Recycle Batteries in Australia
Australia’s battery recycling infrastructure has improved significantly in recent years, and there are now convenient drop-off options in most areas:
B-cycle is Australia’s official battery recycling scheme, funded by battery manufacturers and importers under a product stewardship arrangement. B-cycle collection points are located at participating Aldi stores, Officeworks, Battery World, and many council facilities across the country. They accept all types of household batteries including alkaline, lithium, nickel-metal hydride, and button cells.
Officeworks stores accept batteries for recycling through their in-store collection bins. This is convenient because most people visit Officeworks periodically anyway.
Battery World stores accept old batteries for recycling and can advise on proper handling for different battery types.
Council transfer stations and resource recovery centres across Victoria and other states accept batteries, often with dedicated battery collection points separate from general e-waste.
Some supermarkets and hardware stores host battery collection points, though availability varies by location and chain.
How to Store Used Batteries Safely at Home
Since you’ll likely accumulate batteries over time before taking them to a drop-off point, safe storage matters:
Keep a dedicated container. A small plastic container or jar works well. Don’t use a metal container, as metal can bridge battery terminals and cause short-circuits.
Tape the terminals. For 9V batteries and lithium batteries of any type, cover the terminals with tape before storing. 9V batteries are particularly notorious for causing fires because their positive and negative terminals are right next to each other and easily bridged by metal objects like keys or coins.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Excessive heat can accelerate degradation and increase the risk of leaking or venting.
Keep out of reach of children. This applies especially to button cells and small lithium cells, which are swallowing hazards.
Don’t mix with metal objects. Store batteries away from keys, coins, paper clips, and other metal items that could bridge terminals.
What Happens When Batteries Are Recycled
Recycled batteries go through processes that recover their valuable materials. Alkaline batteries yield zinc and manganese. Lithium-ion batteries yield cobalt, lithium, nickel, and copper. Lead-acid batteries (car batteries) yield lead and sulfuric acid. These recovered materials re-enter manufacturing supply chains, reducing the need for new mining.
Battery recycling technology has advanced significantly, with modern hydrometallurgical processes achieving high recovery rates for valuable materials. As battery volumes grow due to the electrification of transport and increasing use of portable electronics, the economics and environmental importance of battery recycling will only increase.
The bottom line: no battery of any type belongs in any bin. The fire risk is immediate and serious, the environmental contamination is real, and convenient recycling options make proper disposal easy. A small battery collection container in your home or office takes minimal effort to maintain and keeps these problematic items out of the waste stream where they don’t belong.
