The Decision Every Device Owner Faces

Your laptop is slowing down. Your phone’s battery barely lasts half a day. Your monitor has a line of dead pixels across the screen. At some point, every electronic device reaches a crossroads where you need to decide: fix it or replace it? Making the right call saves money, reduces waste, and often gets you a better outcome than defaulting to either extreme.

There’s no universal answer. Sometimes repair is the clear winner. Sometimes replacement makes more sense. And sometimes the best option is an upgrade that extends your device’s life without the cost of a full replacement. The key is knowing how to evaluate each situation.

The Case for Repair

From an environmental perspective, repair is almost always the better choice. The majority of a device’s environmental footprint, estimated at 70-80% for laptops and smartphones, comes from manufacturing, not use. Every year you extend a device’s life through repair avoids the environmental cost of producing a replacement.

Repair also makes financial sense in many situations. A cracked phone screen replacement costs $100-300, compared to $800-2,000 for a new phone. A laptop battery replacement runs $80-200, versus $1,500+ for a new laptop. A blown capacitor on a television circuit board might cost $50-100 to fix, compared to $500+ for a new TV.

Common repairs that are usually worth doing include screen replacements on phones and tablets (if the rest of the device works well), battery replacements on laptops and phones, keyboard replacements on laptops, power supply replacements on desktops, and fan replacements in any device (cheap and straightforward).

The 50% rule: If the repair cost is less than 50% of the replacement cost and the device has at least 2-3 years of useful life remaining after repair, repair is almost always the right choice. This rule works well as a starting point for most decisions.

The Case for Replacement

Repair isn’t always the answer. There are legitimate situations where replacing a device is the smarter choice, even from an environmental standpoint.

If a device is so old that it no longer receives security updates, continuing to use it creates data security risks that may outweigh the environmental benefit of extended use. This is particularly relevant for smartphones and computers that handle sensitive information like banking and email.

Energy efficiency is another factor. A decade-old refrigerator might use two or three times the electricity of a modern equivalent. Over the remaining years of use, the energy savings from a new, efficient model can exceed the environmental cost of manufacturing it. The same logic applies to other energy-intensive appliances like dryers, air conditioners, and older desktop computers.

When the repair cost exceeds 50-60% of the replacement cost and the device is already several years old, replacement often makes more sense. You’re paying nearly the same amount but getting a device with a full lifespan ahead of it rather than one that may need another repair soon.

The Upgrade Sweet Spot

Between full repair and full replacement, there’s often a middle ground: targeted upgrades that dramatically improve performance at a fraction of the replacement cost. This is the option most people overlook, and it’s frequently the best choice.

For slow computers: Adding RAM and replacing a hard drive with an SSD can make a five-year-old computer feel new. An SSD upgrade alone, typically $80-200 depending on capacity, is the single most impactful performance improvement you can make to an older computer. Boot times drop from minutes to seconds, applications open instantly, and general responsiveness improves dramatically.

For phones with battery issues: A battery replacement, typically $80-150 through authorised service providers, can give a phone another two to three years of service. If the phone’s processor and camera still meet your needs, this is far cheaper and less wasteful than a new phone.

For gaming setups: Upgrading a graphics card, adding RAM, or installing a faster SSD can extend a gaming PC’s relevance by several years. These targeted upgrades cost a fraction of a full system rebuild and keep the rest of the still-functional components in use.

How to Evaluate Your Specific Situation

When you’re facing the upgrade-or-replace decision, work through these questions in order:

Is it still receiving security updates? If not, and the device handles sensitive data, that’s a strong argument for replacement regardless of physical condition. Running an unpatched operating system is a genuine security risk.

What exactly is the problem? A specific, diagnosable issue (cracked screen, dead battery, failed hard drive) is usually repairable. Vague, general slowness might be fixable with an upgrade. Multiple simultaneous problems on an older device suggest it’s approaching end of life.

What will the repair or upgrade cost relative to replacement? Get actual quotes rather than guessing. You might be surprised in either direction. Sometimes repairs are cheaper than expected, and sometimes they reveal additional problems that change the equation.

How old is the device, and how long will it remain useful after the fix? A three-year-old laptop with a failed SSD is worth fixing because it likely has three or more good years left. A seven-year-old laptop with the same problem might only have a year or two of useful life remaining, making the economics less favourable.

Are there significant performance or efficiency gains from a new model? If the current device meets your needs adequately and you’re only replacing because of a fixable issue, repair wins. If you’ve been struggling with genuine performance limitations that a repair won’t address, replacement may be justified.

Where to Get Repairs Done

Your options for repairs include manufacturer authorised service centres, independent repair shops, and DIY repair.

Manufacturer service centres use genuine parts and maintain warranty where applicable, but they’re typically the most expensive option. Independent repair shops are often cheaper and can be just as skilled, but quality varies. Ask about the parts they use and whether they offer a warranty on their work.

DIY repair is increasingly accessible thanks to resources like iFixit, which provides detailed guides and sells parts and tools for hundreds of device models. Australia’s growing Right to Repair movement is making parts and documentation more available. For straightforward repairs like battery replacements, RAM upgrades, or SSD installations, DIY is a viable option if you’re comfortable with basic tools.

Repair cafes, run by community volunteers, offer free repair help for small electronics and appliances. They’re a great resource and worth checking whether there’s one operating in your area.

Disposing of the Old Device Responsibly

If you do decide to replace, make sure the old device doesn’t just end up in a drawer or the bin. If it’s still functional, even with issues, it may have value to someone else. Sell it on a marketplace platform, donate it to a charity that refurbishes electronics, or give it to someone who can use it.

If it’s truly at end of life, take it to a proper e-waste recycling point. In Victoria, e-waste has been banned from landfill since July 2019, and the materials inside your old device can be recovered through professional recycling.
