Australian organisations are getting serious about Scope 3 emissions. Corporate travel, supply chains, and upstream logistics all have line items in sustainability reports now. But there is a category that often gets left blank: the end-of-life treatment of your IT fleet.
That gap matters more than it used to.
Why hardware disposal sits in your carbon accounting
When your business retires a laptop, server, or networking device, the way it is handled produces a measurable environmental outcome. Sending equipment to landfill represents a straightforward carbon loss. Responsible disposal through a process aligned to ISO 14001 recovers materials and diverts emissions. The difference between the two is quantifiable.
For most businesses, end-of-life IT disposal falls under Scope 3, Category 5 (waste generated in operations). For manufacturers and larger enterprise buyers, it also appears in Category 12 (end-of-life treatment of sold products). Either way, it is reportable, and regulators and investors are increasingly expecting it to be reported.
Victoria’s e-waste landfill ban has been in effect since 1 July 2019. It removed the worst option from the table. But compliance with the ban and meaningful ESG contribution are not the same thing. Handing a box of old laptops to any licensed recycler keeps you legally compliant. It does not give you the CO2e diversion data, materials recovery figures, or audit documentation that belong in a sustainability disclosure.
What measurable ITAD actually produces
Responsible IT asset disposition, when operated under ISO 14001-aligned processes, generates data you can use. For an organisation retiring 500 devices in a financial year, the reportable CO2e contribution from responsible disposal versus untracked disposal is material. Depending on device type and age, that figure typically sits between 40 and 120 tonnes CO2e. That is a real number in a real report.
Questions your sustainability team should be asking
If your current ITAD provider cannot answer these questions, the data your ESG report needs probably does not exist:
- Can you provide per-job disposal outcome reports at device level?
- Do you operate under ISO 14001-aligned environmental management processes?
- Can you provide CO2e diversion figures based on actual materials recovered?
- What quantities of recoverable materials (copper, aluminium, cobalt, lithium) were processed?

Start now, before the next refresh
You do not need a completed carbon accounting framework before you start. The next hardware refresh is the natural starting point. Document the devices, use a provider that tracks disposal outcomes at an asset level, and capture the CO2e and materials figures. That data becomes your baseline, your year-on-year improvement narrative, and your response the next time a customer or auditor asks what happens to your old equipment.
